Well, you may have noticed that we don’t have a Bardcast this week.

Unfortunately, we have run into a scheduling issue. Namely, Mark has not had a chance to commit a story to mp3 format for this week. Normally, we try to keep a couple stories ‘in the can’ so we can avoid these sorts of things, but… lately, Mark’s been extra busy — pesky real life getting in the way.

So, I think what we need is some help! We desperately need to put some eggs in some other baskets. By that, I mean we need to have some more story contributors. Please, if you know somebody who can tell a story, you can tell one yourself, contact us at bardcast@rocketmail.com.

When we started this, I wanted to be able to put out one story a week. Unfortunately, we’ve not been able to consistently do that. We can, with your help, though.

Thanks in advance.

Greg

Sorry that there is no Bardcast this week due to technical difficulties on the storytelling front, however, I would like to take the opportunity to put out another call for storytellers who might be interested in sharing their talent with us.

Generally the submission process is very simple. Write up a brief into to your story, record yourself reading the intro and telling the story (MP3 format), then submit the 2 files to us at bardcast@rocketmail.com. We will then add the Bardcast intro and finale for use on the site. If you are in need of a free recording software may we recommend Audacity which is an open source software that is very easy to use as long as you have a computer with a microphone. No fancy recording equipment is needed.

Just a final reminder that if you do choose to share your storytelling abilities with us and the world that we are designed to be a ‘Family Friendly’ Podcast, and as such will monitor all submissions before broadcast. Should we have any concerns with the submission we will be sure to contact you to try to sort them out.

Finally, thank you for your continued support of Bardcast. If you wish to support the project financially we would greatly appreciate a PayPal donation to bardcast@rocketmail.com. Should you have any questions, about the podcast or the submission process, please contact us at bardcast@rocketmail.com.

Today’s story is about the great Norse god Thor, god of thunder, and his journey from Asgard, the land of the gods; through Midgard, the land of men; and over the sea to Utgard, the land of the frost giants. This is an ancient Norse myth, probably the only one acceptable to tell in a family setting, which sees the journey of this great Norse god, along with his companion Loki, trickster and shape-shifter god of Asgard, as he journeys to the land of the frost giants to prove his greatness against this group of formidable opponents. Little does he know the strength and guile of the leader of the frost giants, Utgard Loki, and the extent to which he will go to try Thor and his companions.

Today’s story is an old tale that I collected from the works of Hans Christian Anderson, and takes place in Holland, where the tulips grow and the windmills whirl. It involves a young soldier just discharged from the army who is walking back to his hometown through many a village, hamlet and town. On the outskirts of a local kingdom he meets with an old woman who offers him riches for only a small favour, the return to her of a tinderbox lost by her sister. He mostly delivers on the favour and goes on to a life or luxury, downfall, and eventual joy as he….. never mind, I’ll let you hear about it in the story.

So welcome to story time at Bardcast. Throw another log on the fire, refill your beverage, sit back, relax, and I hope you enjoy, “The Tinderbox”.
